Early results from the 2026 local elections confirm a decisive swing to the right across UK, with Nigel Farage’s Reform party (supported By President Trump) delivering an impressive breakthrough while Sir Keir Starmer’s far left Labour government suffers punishing losses in its traditional heartlands.

With results from around 24 of 136 councils now declared, Reform UK has already stormed to more than 220 net gains in councillor seats – all fresh territory for the party.

Labour has been hit hard, losing over 160 seats so far and slumping sharply in the early counts. The Conservatives have also been squeezed, while the leftist Liberal Democrats and Greens have recorded only modest or flat performances.

One of the most telling features of the night is the clear direction of the voter shift. Rather than fragmenting toward other left-leaning or centrist options such as the Greens or Liberal Democrats, the majority of disaffected Labour voters, a leftist party, have moved straight to Reform UK, a right wing party.

This direct lurch to the right has been especially noticeable in northern and Midlands councils that were once considered safe Labour ground.

A major factor driving the shift is widespread public anger over record levels of illegal immigration.

Many voters are clearly frustrated by the persistent small boat crossings in the English Channel and have responded strongly to Reform UK’s firm emphasis on border control, reducing net migration and putting British workers first.

Farage, the cheeky chappie veteran campaigner who led the successful Brexit referendum drive and who has repeatedly voiced admiration for Donald Trump while receiving the U.S. President’s public support, described the early results as a strong signal from the electorate.

Counting continues through the night and into Friday, with further declarations expected to underline the extent of the rightward movement in British politics.
